effect of intravenous meperidine in controlling post dural puncture headache
Authors
abstract
background: spinal anesthesia is usually applied for urologic surgeries. postdural puncture headache (pdph) is among common complications which has not been reduced during last years despite all advances in the field of medicine. therapeutic effects of conventional therapy (paracetamol and novaphen) are being compared to intravenous meperidine in patients suffering from pdph. methods: one hundred patients, with pdph following spinal anesthesia for transurethral lithotripsy were enrolled and randomly allocated to receive conventional (group c) or intravenous meperidine (group p) (20 mg every 5min up to 120mg or when the pain was decreased to less than 3/10). results: time interval to reach acceptable headache was 3 hours in group p compared to 8 hours in group c. group p patients received statistically significantly less amount of paracetamol and novaphen, and experienced fewer episodes of severe headaches in 48 hours after the start of treatment, compared to group c. conclusion: short term intravenous meperidine compared to conventional therapy resulted in more rapid and effective outcomes.

Post-Dural Puncture Headache
August Bier’s first report of spinal anesthesia in August 1898 impressively described the development of a poste dural puncture headache (PDPH) (1). When asked for complications of spinal anesthesia today, patients often respond with PDPH. PDPH is defined as a constant heado ache that worsens in the sitting or upright position folglowing lumbar puncture (LP). Its incidence after spinal anesthes...

Postdural puncture headache (PDPH) has been a problem for patients, following dural puncture, since August Bier reported the first case in 1898. His paper discussed the pathophysiology of low-pressure headache resulting from leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the subarachnoid to the epidural space. Clinical and laboratory research over the last 30 years has shown that use of small-gauge ...

It is well known that symptoms of post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) are more likely if there has been a preceding PDPH. We herein present a patient who developed a PDPH following each of two dural punctures separated by 9 years.
full textEvaluation the effect of dexamethasone on post-dural puncture headache in cesarean surgery
Introduction: Inflammation is one of the probable causes of post-dural puncture headache (PDPH); logically, therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs such as dexamethasone can reduce the headache. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intravenous dexamethasone 8 mg on PDPH in cesarean surgery. Methods: This randomized double-blind clinical study was conducted on 104 patients aged from 1...
full textEffect of prophylactic gabapentin on post-dural puncture headache in patients after cesarean section surgery
Introduction: Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is the most common complication of spinal anesthesia. Numerous drugs have been proposed to prevent or treat post spinal headache, but no definitive treatment is still available. Gabapentin has widely been used for prophylaxis or treatment of different types of headache, so in this study, the preventive effect of gabapentin on PDPH after cesarean...
